PS I'm a big fan of the rent controlled apartments, my in laws live in a classic six on the upper west side, it is where they've been since 1963, and raised their children, step children, grandchildren and have had many many dinner parties, a wedding, post funeral events, you name it. I'd love to post it, one of these days.

We got back from California last week, a red eye with two under two is a challenge to say the least. I think I got the better end of the deal as Cole slept the whole way..Gus squirmed and squealed and was unable to really fall asleep for the first two hours...
We had the most perfect weather and fell madly in love with Bay Area. I especially loved being a short walk from my sister and her three boys. Gus just loved playing with his cousins and their incredibly sweet dog, Reba.

Our non existing entry way now kinda exists...When you enter our apartment, you walk right straight smack into our "dining room" - no entry way, no little vestibule, just the dining room table. So I thought I needed to create a "landing strip" as my dear friend S recommended. So, I took a spin online and saw this funky eames hang it all (pricey for a coat rack but could pass for a work of art, at least that is what I'm telling myself), so i put the hang it all up, added the chair and voila, a place for my handbag, Conor's yoga bag and hooks for light to heavy coats.

Not the greatest photo I know - and I still need to add some art to that wall, just a few pics I have in mind...in the meantime, I kinda have an entry way.

This new old chair has been with our family forever, knocking around. My dad gave it to me, along with a bunch of other pieces of furniture after we bought our place upstate. I kept threatening to reupholster it myself, or get someone to do it:) but years (literally) went by and I finally asked Conor to give it to Salvation Army. A few days later, the chair appeared in our apartment, the next day in the our elevator, I met a lovely designer and her upholster guy and voila! I love it. BEFORE

Rent our Farmhouse

Hello there,
Our farmhouse in upstate New York (under 2 hours from NYC) will be available for rent for the winter months. We will be out of town most of December and into January and with a newborn, i doubt we will be using it much till spring!
Here are some details about the house, it is situated in a gorgeous area, close to all the Hudson Valley has to offer: great restaurants, theatre, shopping and for winter outdoor enthusiasts; skiing in the Berkshires, cross country, sledding etc...

I love love this idea, the 3/50 project, was started by Cinda Baxter, you can check out her blog here. The premise is to choose three independently owned stores in your neighborhood, for instance, your favorite coffee shop (mine is two blocks down, i visit it almost daily), or your favorite little book shop, mine is McNally Jackson's in Nolita or your favorite clothing shop. Spend $50 a month at one of the stores and it can really (and truly) make a big difference to your community and quality of life, not to mention the struggling business owner. I love living on New York's upper west side but I fear it is turning into one giant mall. My husband, a born and bred New Yorker, who grow up in this area, said the change is shocking. In one way, street crime is way down and it is much more kid friendly but gone are all the mom and pop shops, the fabulous Shakespeare & Co bookstore, the Mystery book store, the diners are also fast disappearing...So go out there and choose your 3/50!

In the house I grew up in, my sister and I had (at times) the attic bedroom to ourselves. In the bathroom was a giant red claw foot bath tub, it was awesome. I wish I had a picture of it. I'll never forget the day we had a contractor in the house (I was about 8 or 9) and the tub starting to crack the floor below, the contractor ran down the stairs in this absolute panic and for some reason we thought it was the funniest thing. It has often been said, there is no manual to parenting. First time parents (myself, one of them) must fumble, stumble and find our own way to being a confident, self assured parent. There are so many (well meaning) people, willing to give advice. The best person to listen to, I've found is yourself. This article hit a chord with me, mothers are just trying their best everyday without having to worry about a 6 month old 'babbling vowels'. A friend told me the other day, it really all depends on the rhythm of the mother, is she happy, is she calm etc...and I couldn't agree more. Sometimes, I feel like I've got it all sorted out and then the next day, I feel like I'm flailing (just a little flail here or there:) Every parent I've ever known only wants their child to be healthy and happy, it is universal. I try to read as much as I can about being a good mother, but I might start to listen more to the mother inside me instead of the mother on the written page.

My dear Dad died on Sunday, June 19th (the day before Father's day) of an inoperable brain tumor. He died with so much dignity and grace. I miss him so much. Dad loved his family, he loved skiing, tennis, playing bridge, road trips, picnics and traveling. But above all else he loved to talk about the accomplishments of 'his girls', (much to the embarrassment of me and my sister) but now I look back and it gives me great comfort to know how proud he was of us.

Life goes on and he was adamant I live life to the fullest. We had several lucid days with him before he died, we really got to say everything we wanted and we heard everything from him too; how much he loved us and how proud he was of us .I will be forever grateful for those days. I love you Dad.

Finally, my search for Toms Shoes are over. After going to three shops nearby, (sold out after 1 week!) I got lucky on my fourth try, my new kicks are black (I live in New York after all) and hot red - don't you think they would look just a little fantastic with an all white outfit? The silver is on my maybe list. The best thing about Toms, is when you buy a pair, they match it with giving a brand new pair to a child in need.

Ever since we bought the house upstate I have wanted to put a big window in the living room & paint it. This spring we added a gorgeous picture window and painted it a fresh coat of yellow, da vinci's canvas from Benjamin Moore. My sister has this colour in her house and I have always loved it. It has an ochre look about it and brightens the room up. I just love this yellow.

My twin sister lives way across the country in the Bay Area and lately we've been lamenting the fact that we really need to move to the same city. It is the day to day I miss, small things like grabbing a quick coffee, popping in to see my nephews, reading to them or picking them up from school, taking some time in the afternoon with her to get a pedicure... And then there are the big things, missing birthdays, special occasions, being there for them when the whole house gets ill etc...We make up for it by cris-crossing the country many times and usually after an extensive trip, I do feel better.

C and I have talked about moving to the west coast, an easier, healthier lifestyle in lots of aspects. And with the baby on the way, I've been missing my sis more than ever. These twin sisters and their respective families all live in one gorgeous house together. I could definitely do that!

The Moth

Has anyone out there ever been to a Moth event? It is this really great series of storytelling events from people of all walks of life. It started a few decades ago on New York's lower east side. Conor went to one of the first ones way back when. It has grown into a full fledged non profit with Moth Slams (story telling contests) on both the east and west coasts. And every November they have a big charity event called The Moth Ball at the Capitale in New York. The moth events are a lot of fun and cost a mere $7 bucks for a night's worth of great storytelling!

"The zebras on the red walls at this restaurant have been mesmerizing kids since it opened in 1945." Gino - a gem of a place, they have good no fuss Italian food, good prices and a colourful staff and clientele! It is pure old school. I took my sister there a few nights ago, it was good fun. Thanks to my newly married friend S for introducing me to my new favorite place in town.

I've been collecting images and inspiration for our nursery lately. We are thinking about a nice butter yellow for the walls, and Dwell Studio for Target has some nice looking cribs and changing table, and we plan on taking lots of cues from the image below.

We have light snow flurries in New York right now and the weather is meant to get very chilly this weekend. We are planning on staying warm and cosy this weekend. I could get used to a home in the mountains like the one below.

Last night Conor and I (rather spontaneously) went to see A View from a Bridge, a classic Arthur Miller play starring Scarlett Johansson and Liev Schreiber. I think the fact that Scarlett was in it sealed the deal for Conor! It was brilliant, gripping and Liev was amazing as Eddie Carbone.
